Vernal Hanging Parrot

Vernal Hanging Parrot is the only parrot found in India. It is characterized by a short tail and a red rump. It is a tiny bird and found in forest areas.

Hence I was very surprised to see a few of these parrots in Kotagiri in Tamil Nadu.

There was a group of 10 vernal hanging parrots on a pod covered tree. As its name says, they were "hanging" on different pods on the tree and pulling out the seeds. They were eating the seeds and discarding the unwanted parts.

Every now and then, they would fly away exposing their red rump and bluish tail. But, they would come back to "attack" new pods.
